Lab Architecture

This lab implements Sylva's core building blocks Cluster API for declarative Kubernetes lifecycle management, FluxCD for GitOps-driven deployments, Harbor for secure CNF image registry, and RKE2 as the Kubernetes distribution deploying and validating a 5G Core network function on the stack. It also integrates vCluster-based isolated environments, OpenRAN distributed component connectivity, WG-02 validation framework (CRDs, RBAC, namespaces, ConfigMaps), and WG-04 sustainability monitoring for energy and CO₂ analysis.

Why this Lab ?

This advanced lab provides a deep, hands-on immersion into the Sylva open-source telco cloud stack, the Linux Foundation Europe project backed by Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Vodafone, TIM, Telefónica, Ericsson, and Nokia. Participants work directly with Sylva's core building blocks Cluster API for declarative Kubernetes lifecycle management, FluxCD for GitOps-driven deployments, Harbor for secure CNF image registry, and RKE2 as the Kubernetes distribution deploying and validating a 5G Core network function on the stack. The training covers advanced telco networking (Host-Based Routing, BGP/EVPN, CAMARA API integration) and equips engineers to operate, upgrade, and troubleshoot Sylva-based infrastructure in production. It also introduces vCluster for lightweight multi-cluster environments, OpenRAN distributed communication validation, WG-02 CNF compliance framework, WG-04 sustainability and CO₂ tracking, and advanced telco cloud observability principles.

Lab Objectives

  • Explain Sylva's architecture (Management Cluster vs. Workload Cluster) and position it against OpenStack and vanilla Kubernetes for telco use cases.
  • Deploy and manage Kubernetes workload clusters using Cluster API with declarative lifecycle management.
  • Operate a GitOps pipeline with FluxCD (Source, Helm, Kustomize controllers) and Harbor for secure CNF image management and vulnerability scanning.
  • Onboard and validate a 5G Core CNF (Free5GC) on the Sylva stack with Multus.
  • Perform Kubernetes version upgrades and cluster scaling through CAPI manifest changes.
  • Understand vCluster for lightweight multi-cluster environments in Kubernetes.
  • Apply WG-02 compliance principles and deploy its validation framework (CRDs, RBAC, namespaces, ConfigMaps).
  • Analyze telco cloud sustainability using WG-04 metrics for energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.
